Emma Raducanu’s former coach, Mark Petchey, admits the tennis star is “stubborn” but is rooting for her to bounce back after her recent US Open nightmare.
The 21-year-old went into the final major tournament of the year hoping to create the same magic that saw her win the tournament three years ago.
However, Raducane struggled and lost in the first round to Sofia Kenin.
She has been widely criticised by critics since then, especially since she had only played one hard-court tournament prior to that.

Peccei knows Raducanu well, having previously coached the tennis star.
He acknowledges that she can be “stubborn” at times, but believes her “difficult experiences” will help her in the future, while also defending some of her decision-making.
“I strongly believe that at Emma Raducanu’s age, it’s very unlikely that you’re going to make a mistake,” he told GB News exclusively, via Bally Casino.
“I think you make a decision and then you find a solution. That’s where we are with Emma right now and where she’s finding herself.

“I’ve always said since her fairytale show in New York that she was going to have a pretty eventful few years.
“But I hoped, and I’m sure the people around her hoped, that things would be different for her and not so difficult.”
“She’s stubborn in certain areas, which is a great quality in tennis. You have to have a certain amount of independence. You have to be able to put things aside and have thoughts that you don’t necessarily have to bring into your game, but you have to take things into account.”
“I’m sure she now wishes things had been different.

“But the reality of life is that when you find yourself at a crossroads, you have to make another decision about how to proceed.
“From Emma’s perspective now, there’s no point in looking back and dwelling too much on the past few years – it’s all wasted energy.
“I hope that this difficult experience has given her a roadmap or signpost of where she wants to go from here on out to develop as a player.”
As mentioned above, Raducanu’s decision to play just one hard-court match before the US Open has been controversial.

Peccei acknowledges it was a “questionable decision.”
But he also believes Raducanu has now learned from his mistakes.
“I think it was a questionable decision to not play any warm-up matches before the U.S. Open,” he continued.
“I can only imagine that after the tournament, she realized this and will never make the same mistake again.”
Emma Raducanu has vowed to learn from her recent experience at the US Open.

“Overall, I think Emma needs to put all the information she has gathered over the past few years to good use.
“Instead of looking at it as a negative, she should look at it as a positive, a learning curve.”
“I think there’s a big positive to take from what’s happened over the past few years that will make the rest of her career a lot smoother as she gets back on top.”
“I have no doubt at all that she deserves to be at the very top of tennis and I am sure she will return to those heights again in the not too distant future.”
