- Brook was named England’s ODI captain in place of the injured Jos Buttler.
- He immediately contacted Trescothick, the acting white-ball coach.
- England will play their first ODI against Australia at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
Harry Brook is due to captain England for the first time later this week but showed his enthusiasm for the job by sending a text message to stand-in coach Marcus Trescothick just minutes after the final T20 match against Australia was called off.
The 25-year-old Yorkshireman has been eager to begin planning for the five one-day matches against Australia, starting on Thursday, after Jos Buttler was ruled out with a recurrence of his right calf injury.
Trescothick responded to the former England Under-19 captain, who captained the Northern Superchargers to victory in five of their six matches last month, saying he was busy with post-match business after the T20 series finished 1-1 due to the cancellation of the match at Old Trafford.
“We’ve seen him play at No. 100 and the way he approaches things,” Trescothick said. “I don’t think it’s going to be much different than when Phil (Salt) was here.”
“We have some good players who understand the game of cricket well and suit the positive style of cricket we are aiming to play.”

England acting coach Marcus Trescothick will take over until Brendon McCullum takes over.
Buttler, 34, remains in the T20 squad this week, just as he was two years ago when a calf injury ruled him out of the seven-match tour of Pakistan.
“At this age, you just have to make sure you’re doing the right things. There’s a lot to look forward to in the future,” he said of the recent setback he suffered while preparing for a 100-mile race and which worsened earlier this month.
“When you get injured, it forces you to stop and look at things in a different way, so it’s fun to be with the guys and meet new faces and see who they are. Share your thoughts and try to listen to theirs.”
Liam Livingstone was one of the players not initially selected to report to Nottingham ahead of the first ODI, but England responded to his man-of-the-series performance, which included scoring 87 runs off 47 balls to tie the series in Cardiff last Friday, by recalling him yesterday as a replacement for Leicestershire left-arm giant Josh Hull, who injured his quadriceps on his Test debut against Sri Lanka last week.
“It’s a reward for a good performance and also dealing with the disappointment of being left out in such good form,” Trescothick said.
“That’s how I want players to respond: come back and say, ‘No, you made a mistake. Put me back.’ It’s great to have him come back and play like he is.”
Liam Livingstone has been restored to England’s ODI squad following his impressive performance in the T20 series.
Tall bowler Josh Hull sustained a quadriceps injury during England’s Test series against Sri Lanka.
Trescothick will take charge of England’s white-ball team until Brendon McCullum takes over as general manager in January, meaning the Test batting coach will be involved in the final match of the summer against Australia as well as pre-Christmas tours to Pakistan, the West Indies and New Zealand.
Buttler would have hung up the gloves in the T20s if he was fit, and England must decide whether Salt or Jamie Smith will take the gloves for the one-day matches, as well as which games Jofra Archer will miss as part of a lengthy return-to-bats programme.
