Shots fired after Edgar Berlanga win, Canelo Alvarez accused of ‘taking advantage of the public’

Paulie Malignaggi accused Canelo Alvarez of “taking advantage of the crowd” after his win over Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night.

The bout in Las Vegas went to a full contest and Alvarez won by unanimous decision to defend his WBC, WBA and WBO super-middleweight world titles.

But Malignaggi isn’t impressed.

The former boxing star has accused Canadian Casino of “taking advantage of the crowd” by fighting lesser men.

He also slammed the decision to make the bout a pay-per-view.

“I expect Canelo will continue to do what he’s always done – take advantage of the public,” he said.

“I don’t see him fighting anyone who could really beat him.

“And I don’t usually have a problem with that. Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. went on a retirement tour at the end of his career, but at least he respected the world championship and fought his best while he had the right to it.”

“And after he lost the world championships, he went on a retirement tour. I have no objection to that. It’s about respecting the sport first. That’s why Chavez is a legend and will always remain a legend.”

“But Canelo is taking advantage of the situation. He’s holding the belt hostage while he goes on a retirement tour, dodging the best fighters of all time.”

“He’s done it consistently and will likely continue to do so.”

“If he’s already done that, there’s no reason not to do it. He’s not going to suddenly change his mind and say, ‘Oh, I was taking advantage of the public. Now let me fight the best.'”

“I think he’s going to end up fighting Chris Eubank and after this fight, I think you’re going to start seeing that name in connection with Canelo.”

Commenting on the decision to put the fight on pay-per-view, he added: “It’s a joke. It’s an absolute joke to make people pay pay-per-view for a shitty fight like this.”

“This is not a criticism of Edgar, I just hope he gets selected for this opportunity.

“It’s a lot of money, but honestly, [Canelo] You are the undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world, yet you have managed to completely avoid your toughest rivals for years.”

Canelo Alvarez was too strong for Edgar Berlanga in Saturday night’s boxing match.

Terence Crawford expressed his desire to fight Alvarez on social media after the fight.

But Malignaggi isn’t sure the fight will actually take place.

“I don’t know if Crawford will fight again. I think he wants to fight Canelo,” he said.

“154 pounds is a very tough weight class, and fighting some of the unknown, hungry 154-pounders would tarnish his legacy because they’re good enough to beat him, but they don’t have the name recognition.”

Polly Malignaggi criticized Canelo Alvarez after his win on Saturday night.

“That’s a little harsh. He’s accomplished a lot, but I don’t think he’ll get the credit for beating any of these guys in the 154-pound division.”

“Look at someone like Bahram Murtazaliev. He’s not well known. In fact, I just pronounced his name wrong. That’s how little he’s known.”

“But he’s extremely talented and there are a lot of guys like him in this division. Crawford would be risking his own legend by taking on some great unknown fighters.”

“The biggest challenge with fighting Canelo at 168 pounds is probably the weight, so it’s a question of risk and reward. For Crawford, it’s either win or lose against Canelo. It’s a shame because I’d like to see more of him, but I can understand why he doesn’t want to fight the hungry fighters at 154 pounds.”
